Happy Hens = HEALTHY EGGS
At Misty Valley Farm, we believe that great eggs start with healthy chickens. Our flock of approximately 1,000 laying hens spends their days outdoors on pasture, where they can express their natural behaviors—scratching, pecking, dust bathing, chasing insects, and grazing on fresh grasses.
The result is a healthier, happier flock and eggs that are as nutritious as they are delicious.

What Does “Pasture-Raised” Mean?
The terms “cage-free,” “free-range,” and “pasture-raised” are often used interchangeably, but they represent very different farming practices.

CAGE-FREE
Cage-free hens are not housed in cages, but they typically live inside large barns. While they have more room to move than caged hens, they may never go outdoors or have access to fresh pasture.

FREE-RANGE
Free-range hens are provided access to the outdoors, but the amount of outdoor space and the time spent outside can vary significantly. In many cases, outdoor access may be limited to small areas adjacent to a barn.

PASTURE-RAISED
Pasture-raised hens spend their days outdoors on grass-covered pasture with ample room to roam and forage.
At Misty Valley Farm, our hens have access to fresh pasture where they can consume grasses, seeds, insects, and other natural foods in addition to a carefully balanced feed ration. This more natural lifestyle promotes bird health and produces eggs with exceptional flavor and quality.
Why Pasture Matters
Chickens are natural foragers. Given the opportunity, they will spend much of their day searching for insects, worms, seeds, and tender greens. Access to pasture allows them to engage in these natural behaviors while benefiting from fresh air, sunshine, and exercise.
We believe this approach not only improves animal welfare but also creates a superior product for our customers.
The Difference You Can See
Many people notice the difference in pasture-raised eggs the moment they crack one open.
Pasture-raised eggs often feature:
Deep golden-orange yolks
Firm, thick egg whites
Richer flavor
Stronger shells
Excellent freshness
The color of the yolk comes in part from the natural pigments found in grasses and other plants consumed by hens on pasture.
Nutritional Benefits
Research has shown that eggs from pasture-raised hens can contain higher levels of certain beneficial nutrients compared to conventionally produced eggs. Depending on the hens’ diet and forage availability, pasture-raised eggs may contain:
Increased omega-3 fatty acids
Higher levels of vitamin A
Higher levels of vitamin E
More naturally occurring carotenoids, which contribute to darker yolks
Improved omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratios
While nutrition can vary throughout the year based on forage conditions and diet, many consumers choose pasture-raised eggs because they value both the nutritional benefits and the farming practices behind them.
