Valais Blacknose Sheep

At Misty Valley Farm, we are proud to be helping preserve and expand this extraordinary breed in the United States. Known around the world for their distinctive black faces, curly fleece, and gentle personalities, Valais Blacknose sheep have become one of the most sought-after sheep breeds among livestock enthusiasts and small farmers alike.

Whether you’re visiting the farm, learning about the breed, or searching for breeding stock, we’re excited to share our passion for these remarkable animals.

A Rich Swiss Heritage

Valais Blacknose sheep originated in the Valais region of southern Switzerland, where they have thrived in the rugged Alpine mountains for hundreds of years. Developed as a hardy dual-purpose breed, they are valued for both their wool and meat production. Their unique appearance—including black markings on the face, ears, knees, and feet, along with impressive spiral horns—makes them instantly recognizable.

Just as impressive as their looks is their temperament. Valais Blacknose sheep are known for being friendly, calm, and easy to work with, making them a favorite among shepherds and visitors of all ages.

Building the Breed in the United States

Because live Valais Blacknose sheep were not originally available for import into the United States, American breeders began establishing the breed through imported genetics and carefully managed breeding programs. The first Valais Blacknose lambs born in the U.S. marked the beginning of an exciting effort to develop domestic flocks that closely match the Swiss breed standard.

Today, breeders across the country are working together to strengthen and expand the breed while maintaining the characteristics that make Valais Blacknose sheep so special.

Breed-Up Program

Misty Valley Farm is proud to participate in a breed-up program, which allows breeders to develop high-percentage Valais Blacknose sheep through successive generations of selective breeding.

Each generation increases the percentage of Valais Blacknose genetics:

F1 – 50% Valais Blacknose

F2 – 75% Valais Blacknose

F3 – 87.5% Valais Blacknose

F4 – 93.75% Valais Blacknose

F5 – 96.875% Valais Blacknose

Through careful selection for conformation, markings, fleece quality, and temperament, breed-up animals move closer to the Swiss standard with every generation.

Embryo Transfer Program

In addition to participating in the breed-up program, we also utilize embryo transfer technology to help advance purebred Valais Blacknose genetics in the United States.

Embryo transfer allows embryos from genetically superior purebred Valais Blacknose donor ewes to be implanted into carefully selected recipient ewes. This process enables breeders to produce more offspring from exceptional bloodlines while maintaining the highest standards for health, conformation, fleece quality, and breed character.

At Misty Valley Farm, our recipient ewes are Gotland sheep. Their calm temperament, excellent maternal instincts, ease of lambing, and strong milk production make them outstanding surrogate mothers. These qualities help provide purebred Valais Blacknose lambs with the best possible start in life.

Embryo transfer plays an important role in accelerating genetic progress and expanding the availability of purebred Valais Blacknose sheep in North America. By combining advanced reproductive technologies with responsible animal husbandry, we are helping preserve and promote one of the world’s most unique and sought-after sheep breeds.

Through both our breed-up and embryo transfer programs, Misty Valley Farm is committed to supporting the future of Valais Blacknose sheep while producing healthy, well-raised animals that exemplify the breed’s exceptional qualities.
